Did you know...
Toads eat 100 insects a day. So Sandy's Back Porch carries Toad houses to help you control the slugs in your garden or yard. The toads with gather in the toad house and feast on your slugs that are feasting on your hostas.
My green thumb came only as a result of the mistakes I made while learning to see things from the
plant's point of view.

Weather means more when you have a garden. There's nothing like listening to a shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your
green beans.

In order to live off a garden, you practically have to live in it. - Frank McKinney Hubbard
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Nancy and Chris have been hard at work growing a second crop of premium annuals which are looking gorgeous.
Our perennials are blooming their hearts out hoping to be planted in your garden soon.
You’ll be amazed by our selection of good looking plants. So, if you need just a few to tuck in here and there or if you need to plant an entire bed, we’ve got what you need. |
| Although Mother Nature has been so kind to us this June (a big thanks from me to her), you’ll want to make sure your newly planted babies get plenty of moisture. Over-watering is the kiss of death in our clay soil, so do a “finger test” before you water if you aren’t sure. |
Speaking of water, our first shipment of rain barrels has finally arrived. They hold 60 gallons of rain water which is far better for our plants than city water. What a treat for our gardens AND a great way to conserve our resources. |

Hard to believe, but the 2009 annual and perennial catalogs have started to arrive. How can I make decisions for ’09 when I’m still trialing the new ’08 varieties? With so many stunning new colors of geraniums (a personal favorite), calibrochoas, sun coleus, etc. to choose from, I’ll need another greenhouse for sure.
I heard my first cicadae tonight. According to a reliable source, our first frost should be 6 months from today. Wouldn’t this be great? Well, as I’m “salivating” over the 2009 catalogs, I hope you’re enjoying all the sounds of the summer season!

PS: Stop by and see our beautiful front beds. Julia has created a stunning display!

Quick Tips:

Going on vacation? This is a great time to trim back impatiens, petunias, coleus, verbena anything that benefits from hair cut now and then. By taking off an inch or two your plant will send out a fresh flush of foliage and look better longer. Yes, this is hard to do, but once you get used to it you’ll see how much better your plants look.
Sedge commonly called "Water Grass" is growing rapidly now. Spray with "Sedgehammer" and a spreader sticker to keep under control. Pulling out this grass will only reward you with an even bigger patch later.
Fertilome Root Stimulator helps all plants (from herbs to trees) go through the shock of transplant easier and root in faster. You can use this several times the first season to help them settle in.
Fertilome Systemic Fungicide gives a plant 2 weeks of protection from a fungal attack. Now’s the time to do a preventative spray as the fungus is just starting to appear. |
