Sandy's Back Porch

Rejoice in the Simple Pleasures at Sandy's Back Porch

Dear "Bloom" friends -

Working in a nursery can be very dirty work, so this year we all needed new t-shirts.  Instead of just putting “staff” or “I work here” on the back, Julia came up with the title “Plant Adoption Coordinator.”  We all had a great chuckle over this and agreed it was exactly what we wanted on our shirts.  Now that we’re wearing them, I love to show people our backs.  I can always tell who the gardeners are because they laugh. Those who don’t garden just have this puzzled look on their faces.  I then explain to them “it’s like going to the humane society and wanting to bring all the cute animals home.”   “Oh, I get it now” is their usual response.

Some may also call this “plant lust” as defined in this months issue of Fine Gardening.  You see a plant, don’t know where you’re going to plant it, but just have to have it anyway (And, if you’re like me, sometimes you don’t have it planted by the end of the season and winter it over in your garage).

So why is this “plant lust” and “plant adoption coordinator” so pertinent now?  This Saturday is the “Gardens in Bloom” tour sponsored by the St. Clair County Extension and Education Foundation.  Eight local homeowners have volunteered to put their gardens on display for our viewing pleasure.

So, our advice for you is, get out of the dirt, and check out what other gardeners are doing in their yards.  It will be a fun way to get ideas and inspiration for your own garden!  After your done touring, stop here for refreshments and plenty of helpful information from one of our “plant adoption coordinators.”

Happy Touring!

Sandy
