October 2009

Did you know...

Time to plant Bulbs!  We have a large selection of Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus, Hyacinths, Alliums, and Iris, too. Always use bulb food when planting to ensure the best start for your bulbs.

Our Christmas Bulbs have arrived-Amaryllis and Paper Whites! Usual flowering time for the amaryllis is 7-10 weeks.  Remember, size does matter-larger bulbs produce more flowers.  Paper Whites generally bloom within 4-6 weeks of planting. Add the beauty of nature to your holiday festivities this season with real flowers!

Dear Bloom Friends -

Just wanted to send out a quick note to let you know what’s going on now at your favorite garden center.  We’ve put several things on sale-check out the sidebar-that we thought might interest you.    We still have quite the selection of perennials that are looking for a cozy garden to call home.  Plant now and they’ll have plenty of time to get established before the ground freezes.  Just make sure to use root stimulator when transplanting.

The hardy mums are blooming now in full, bright color.  They certainly make a statement on these cloudy days.   To help insure they survive the winter, don’t trim off the stems once they finish flowering.  Leave them go until early spring when you start to see some new growth at the bottom.  Also, they’d prefer not to be planted in an area that gets cold, north winds (who wouldn’t).

Some of you may not know that we have a nice selection of trees and shrubs, too.  Our stock of trees is mostly smaller ornamental types-the kind that makes you say “oh, WOW!” when they’re in full color.  For most varieties, fall is the optimum planting time.

And, don’t forget to plant some spring blooming bulbs while you’re out gardening this fall.  They are the perfect cure for the Midwest winter blues.  Some varieties can start blooming as early as February.  Our selection includes lots of tulips, daffodils, aliums, crocus and a few collections that take the guess work out of planning your bed.

Happy Gardening!
