Helpful Tips...
Going on vacation? This is a great time to trim back impatiens, petunias, coleus, verbena anything that benefits from hair cut now and then. By taking off an inch or two your plant will send out a fresh flush of foliage and look better longer. Yes, this is hard to do, but once you get used to it you’ll see how much better your plants look. Sedge commonly called "Water Grass" is growing rapidly now. Spray with "Sedgehammer" and a spreader sticker to keep under control. Pulling out this grass will only reward you with an even bigger patch later. Fertilome Root Stimulator helps all plants (from herbs to trees) go through the shock of transplant easier and root in faster. You can use this several times the first season to help them settle in. Fertilome Systemic Fungicide gives a plant 2 weeks of protection from a fungal attack. Now’s the time to do a preventative spray as the fungus is just starting to appear. By June 1st, if you haven’t cut back spring bloomers, do so now. Weed Free Zone – Spray weeds to keep them from going to seed to protect from further problems Pharm-Solutions “Weed Pharm” Certified organic weed and grass killer kills with food grade organic acid. This is a non-selective herbicide and should only be used in areas that you want total knock down. Cut grass on highest mower setting during dryer times. Keep your plant tags. This information will help you to diagnose any problems or for remembering next year what you absolutely loved and want to plant again. This goes for trees, shrub, annuals, etc. (you may want to put these in a secure place so that your spouse doesn’t think they are trash and toss them). Top dress beds with a 1 inch layer of mushroom compost, being careful not to cover the crown of the plant. This is an all natural fertilizer that your plants will love. They’ll thank you with beautiful blooms and foliage. ALWAYS use root stimulator any time you plant (trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals) to reduce the stress of transplant shock and develop new roots quickly. Use at planting, then again 7 to 10 days later, and just a few more times throughout the first growing season. This will dramatically increase the viability of the plant. Use Weed Free zone now to keep spring weeds from setting seeds. This is the only weed killer that kills in cool weather. You’ll see dramatic results in 48 hours. Don’t cut off the foliage of spring blooming bulbs as they are using this to store energy for making next year’s blooms. Top dressing them with a timed release fertilizer will help them produce bigger and better blooms for next year. Fertilize trees and shrubs now with Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub food. A healthy plant is much less likely to be infected by disease and better able to handle an insect infestation. Don’t put crabgrass control over new seed. It will prevent it from germinating. Fertilizer acid loving plants (rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, hollies) now with holly-tone, an all natural acidifying fertilizer. Top dress beds with a 1 inch layer of mushroom compost, being careful not to cover the crown of the plant. Use root stimulator any time you plant (trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals) to reduce the stress of transplant shock and develop new roots quickly. Mow grass on the lowest setting to take off winter kill. Then apply fertilizer with crabgrass control (you won’t be able to seed in these areas as the seed won’t germinate)
